Living in the Past

I hear from many people from different countries regarding autism. As bad as I feel about our understanding of autism here in the US and how hard it remains for so many people, I now understand how much worse it is in other countries. My life has been liberated by communication. I have many challenges, but also opportunities. Most significantly, my school district allowed me to be educated in regular classes once I proved my intelligence by typing on a letter board. Now my improved skills in handwriting and typing on an iPad are making my life easier still, but I have a long way to go.

Many times I feel down and I realize how hard it is to overcome my body, but I also know I am improving and I practice motor issues daily to work on my mind body connection. But the letters I receive  tell me how it is in other countries where autism treatment is stuck in the 1950s where belief in “refrigerator mothers” causing autism and treatment by psychotherapy still rule. This is in developed countries, mind you.

How do they treat polio? Do they still use iron lungs or do they immunize? It’s inhumane. If you live in France, or other countries treating autism this way or in other outmoded ways, please share your experiences with me.

But I also know that some countries are stuck even further in the past, in the 19th century, Victorian asylum mode. I need to help change things. How do you think we can do it?

  1. I think if our society can come to understand the need for equal treatment of people despite labels they may have applied then our society can understand how horrific for people with Autism and communication difficulties to be incarcerated. I am a recreation support worker and am seeking to have children without disability join our program in as a we aim to do the things all kids should do, we just provide extra support.
Of course, a strong politician to stand up and work for change would speed things along.

  2. By the work like what we are doing!

Today 13 july : 3 children autistic are to be place away from their mother because of munchusen syndrom which sure does exist only here in France .Grenoble, 10 juillet : un juge des enfants demande le placement de 3 enfants autistes à l’Aide Sociale à l’Enfance.

I would suggest that you just continue to share your experiences — what you’ve done with your book and what you’re doing here is going to make a difference over time, especially since others with similar challenges are also coming forward with their stories. Perhaps you and others will get a chance to travel and present your stories, as well.

Ido ,you have done so much allready for so many children worldwide , your book has been a welcomed insight into our children’s minds , and hopefully a ripple effect of presuming competence and RPM will continue to spread ..keep blogging and us parents will keep sharing . ..

  8. We need to get you everywhere again and again– on social media and national TV, cable channels, streaming services, etc. Would you consider a reality show Ido?

    Greetings Ido,

It would be so useful to have your book translated into French, for example, and have it published in France, and all countries in their language. You could do this with your blog to!
Thank you for your frankness, curiosity and willingness to share your knowledge.

    • Hi Leslie,
It will soon be available in two more languages. We would love to have it translated into French and other languages. If you know of publishers in France who would like to translate the book, we would be very happy to explore the possibility.
