  1. Hi Ido! I am a special education teacher and I’ve been reading your blog posts. Thank you for sharing your story. Your words are helping me grow as a person and as an educator.

I have a question for you about motor skills. I read about when you were younger and wanted to touch the flashcard showing a tree but touched the house instead. I know this is, of course, many years later, but the letters on a board or an iPad are smaller than most flashcards. Do you think your motor skills in this area have developed over the years, which makes touching the letters easier, or do you think something else is at play?

I would love to help students communicate through typing or using a letter board, but I can’t wrap my mind around them being able to select those boxes accurately when larger flashcards or pictures are difficult.

I hope this does not come across as disbelief or criticism, but rather as a limitation of my brain in understanding this. Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us!

  2. Hi Heather,
It is a long process and a skill that needs to be developed over time. It is more motivating to learn to type to communicate than to touch flashcards. People need to learn how to visually scan and focus and then get their hand to the desired letter. They don’t start with the tiny keyboard but with larger and fewer letters presented but as their skills progress keyboards and tablets are introduced.

  3. You are awesome! An inspiration to my son and my family.

  4. We need book 3! ‘the collected speeches and interviews’ or something.
